"The OBR [Optical Backscatter Reflectometer™] was purchased for our fiber optics product test lab. Our primary job at the lab is to perform optical testing for product development design verification and for final product performance qualification. Most of our tests require optical monitoring while products undergo various kinds of stress conditioning intended to simulate environmental and mechanical conditions for which the products are designed. Soon after receiving our Luna OBR, an especially important qualification test that ran for 30 days was just concluding. We analyzed the data and discovered a failure in one of our samples. Since the product was scheduled to then begin a follow-up test, it was not possible to disassemble the product in order to diagnose the cause of the failure. Had we done so, the sample would have been disqualified from further testing and we would have had to start the entire test sequence from the beginning with a new sample. Due to the complexity of the test set-up, it was not even clear that the failure had occurred within the sample itself. We temporarily disconnected the failed sample channel from the optical monitoring system and connected it to the Luna OBR. In a short while, it was obvious to us as well as our test program witnessing agency that the fault was not with our product, but rather within one of the connectors used in the setup. I can say that with a few more instances such as this, the Luna OBR will have paid for itself."
