Hardware: Optical Vector Analyzer
Problem: When I compare measurements (GD, PMD, etc) from the OVA text file to measurements that I process from the Jones Matrix data in the OVA text file, I do not get the same results. What is causing the difference?
Solution: There are two main reasons that the measurements in the OVA text file may differ between calculated values: 1) removal of the common phase term and 2) filter settings.
Common Term Removal
The Jones Matrix Phase data that is saved to an OVA text file has a common phase term removed from all elements of the spreadsheet Jones Matrix. This common term is contained in the "Linear Phase Deviation" column of the spreadsheet file. You must add this phase term into the phase of each JM element to get the correct data for processing other parameters.
For example, if you have the 4 Phase elements of the Jones Matrix (A, B, C, and D) and the linear phase term (P):
Row 1: A1 B1 C1 D1 P1
Row 2: A2 B2 C2 D2 P2
Row 3: A3 B3 C3 D3 P3
You would add the Linear Phase Deviation term of each row, to all four JM phases of that row. So you essentially get:
Row 1: A1+P1 B1+P1 C1+P1 D1+P1
Row 2: A2+P2 B2+P2 C2+P2 D2+P2
Row 3: A3+P3 B3+P3 C3+P3 D3+P3
After adding the linear phase deviation column into the Jones Matrix Phases, the data is then ready for processing.
Filter settings
Assuming the phase term is added back into the JM phase column and you are still getting different measurements, the differences between the calculated parameters and the text file parameters can be a result of the smoothing filter on the front panel of the OVA software being applied to your data. This filter is applied to the parametric data such as IL, GD, PMD, and PDL, but not to the Jones Matrix (JM) phases and amplitudes in your saved data. As a result, your measurements calculated from the Jones Matrix will not match the spreadsheet file measurements. To get matching results, you must turn off the smoothing filter. You can do this in several ways:
- Set the filter bandwidth to zero on the front panel of the software;
- Uncheck the "Always Apply Smoothing Filter" option in the options menu; or
- Uncheck the "Apply Smoothing Filter to Spreadsheet Output" option in the "Select Data Save Options" pop-up box under the file menu.
After adding back the common phase term and removing the smoothing filter, you should have identical measurements and calculations.
