Hardware: Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometer
Problem: How do I get an accurate fiber length measurement with the OFDR?
Solution: In order to get the ultimate in accuracy
in a DUT length measurement with an OFDR, you should measure in reflection
and attach a short patch cord between the DUT and OFDR source port.
Then measure the difference between the reflection at the connection
to the DUT and the reflection at the end of the DUT. See Figure 1 below
which shows the red and yellow cursors marking the patch cord and end
of DUT. The length is shown as dX. Note: This relative measurement
of distance will be accurate to the spatial resolution of the instrument
and to the degree of accuracy in the group index used to convert optical
delay to length.

Figure 1: DUT length is shown as the distance (dX) between the two cursors. In this example, it's 5.027m.
