Luna’s Optical Backscatter Reflectometer Receives “Best
in Test ” Award (Blacksburg, VA, Jan. 19, 2007) Luna Technologies’ Optical Backscatter Reflectometer (OBR) with Distributed Sensing received a 2007 “Best in Test” Honorable Mention Award from the editors of Test & Measurement World magazine. The 2007 Best in Test Awards honors new products introduced between Nov. 1, 2005, and Oct. 31, 2006, that brought a significant technological advancement to the market in the electronics test and measurement industry. Products from all areas of electronics testing and inspection are eligible. This is the second year that Luna’s OBR has won such honors. “Winning an award from Best in Test for the second year in a row is a testament to Luna’s strong commitment toward innovation and new product development,” said Brian Soller, Luna Technologies’ General Manager. “The distributed sensing function of the OBR gives users the ability to locate heat and stress points in most standard optical assemblies by using the fiber itself as the sensor. We see this as a significant innovation that will ultimately allow our customers to make higher quality products.” Luna’s OBR offers unmatched diagnostic capabilities to the manufacturers of fiber optic components and assemblies. It was enhanced to include the ability to monitor temperature and strain distribution. The OBR with Distributed Sensing applies to a wide range of applications. With a length range of up to 500 meters, with millimeters of resolution, users can monitor the effects from component-level heating in optical amplifiers, to strain and load redistribution in aircraft harnesses. Other applications include temperature monitoring inside cabinets and enclosures, and smart fiber location allowing users to identify the location in fiber assemblies simply by touching the fiber. The OBR measures phase shifts in the coherent Rayleigh backscatter from the fiber and components that comprise the assembly under test, thus this technique does not require any specialty sensing fiber. This is the second consecutive year Luna’s OBR has won an award from Test & Measurement World magazine. Before the addition of the sensing feature, Luna’s OBR received a 2006 Best in Test Award as the first component and module level reflectometer with backscatter sensitivity. Contact: |
